The Midwifery Model of Training Midwives

The Midwifery Model of Training Midwives is based on the fact that midwifery is unique among health professions; caring for women in the normal life process of pregnancy and childbirth.

This model:
  • Embraces the diversity of training options and routes of entry into the profession.
  • Respects the student as a capable adult learner, bringing valuable life experience to their midwifery training.
  • Emphasizes woman-centered learning.
  • Has an expectation of completion of core competencies for entry-level midwives as determined by the regional or national professional association.
  • Recognitizes that hands-on experience in a variety of birth settings is optimal for the professional midwife’s training
